II , 13). »<br> <br> Ce n'est pas seulement dans les trous de la pierre que la colombe trouve un refuge assuré, c'est aussi dans les ouvertures de la muraille : Si nous prenons cette muraille, non pour des monceaux de pierre, mais pour l'assemblée des saints, voyons s'il n'entend point par ses ouvertures, les places qu'ont laissées vides les anges qui sont tombés du ciel par leur orgueil, et qui seront remplies par les hommes comme des ruines qui doivent être rebâties de pierres vivantes. Ce qui faisait dire à l'apôtre saint Pierre : « Vous approchant de la pierre vivante, soyez vous-mêmes des pierres vivantes, employées à des édifices spirituels (I Pet. II). »<br> <br> Je crois aussi qu'on peut dire avec quelque raison, que les anges qui vous gardent sont comme des murailles dans la vigne du Seigneur, je veux dire dans l'assemblée des prédestinés, puisque saint Paul dit: « Tous ces esprits bienheureux ne sont-ils pas les ministres de Dieu, envoyés pour servir ceux qui sont destinés à l'héritage des élus (Heb. I, 14) ?» Et le Prophète: «L'ange du Seigneur veillera à l'entour de ceux qui le craignent (Psal. XXXIII, 8). »<br> <br> Si cette explication vous agrée, le sens sera, que deux choses consolent l'Église dans le temps et, dans le lieu de son pèlerinage.<br> <br> PPour le passé, la mémoire de la passion de Jésus-Christ, et pour l'avenir, la pensée et l'espérance qu'elle sera reçue dans la société des saints.<br> <br> Elle regarde ces deux choses avec un plaisir qui ne la rassasie jamais, l'un et l'autre objet lui semblent infiniment doux, l'un et l'autre lui serviront de refuge et de consolation contre les afflictions et les douleurs, parce qu'elle ne tonnait pas seulement ce qu'elle doit espérer, mais encore de qui elle le doit espérer. Son attente est pleine de joie et de certitude, parce qu'elle est fondée sur la mort de Jésus-Christ. Pourquoi s'étonnerait-elle de la grandeur de la récompense, quand elle sait quel est le prix de sa rançon?<br> <br> Qu'elle a de bonheur à considérer en esprit ces ouvertures saintes par lesquelles a coulé le sang sacré de son Sauveur ! Qu'elle a de satisfaction à repasser sans cesse en elle-même ces creux de la muraille, ces retraites et ces demeures, qui sont si différentes, et si nombreuses dans la maison du Père, et dans lesquelles il doit placer ses enfants selon la diversité de leurs mérites!<br> <br> Et parce que maintenant elle ne peut pas encore y entrer en effet, elle y entre de la manière qu'il est possible, en esprit et par un continuel souvenir.
